He Granadilla de Abona City Councilthrough the Department of Municipal Public Servicesdirected by Marcos Antonio Rodríguez Santana, and in collaboration with the public company Sermugran and the Local Police, will launch a campaign to eradicate uncivil behavior by citizens and companies that deposit waste incorrectly.

Specifically, the municipal initiative refers above all to leaving garbage outside the containers even when they are empty, as well as those that use trash cans as containers.

This campaign will have a double effect: identifying both the misuse of waste containers, as well as the failure to separate waste correctly. In this sense, the City Council remembers that depositing garbage bags on public roads generates image and environmental damage and the proliferation of rodents and insects that affects all the residents of the municipality.

To avoid this, the Department of Municipal Public Services will intensify surveillance with plainclothes agents, given the considerable increase in non-compliance with municipal ordinance and state law on this matter. Since 2020, the waste ordinance of the Granada City Council establishes that failure to separate waste for recycling and misuse of bins are minor offenses that can be fined with an amount ranging from 750 to 3,000 euros, in the case of the most serious infractions. The City Council warns the population that it will be “intransigent” on this issue, “applying the regulations to the letter and intensifying surveillance on the streets of the municipality to eradicate behavior that harms the entire municipality.”

HARMFUL ACTIONS

The councilor for the Municipal Public Services area stated that “this type of actions are harmful to the environment, also causing irreparable damage to the image of those who visit us, as well as to the correct coexistence of all the residents of Granadilla.”

Likewise, Marcos Antonio Rodríguez Santana stressed that, “although our responsibility is to enforce the Municipal Cleaning and Waste Collection Ordinance, the quickest and most efficient solution involves the simple gesture of the population of correctly depositing waste.”
