Despite the rainfall in the archipelago at the end of March and beginning of April, the water situation in Tenerife remains critical. The prolonged extreme drought situation that Tenerife has been experiencing continues, directly affecting the agricultural sector.
Balsas de Tenerife has announced that they are “obliged” to implement various modulation and restrictions in the irrigation water supply, which will come into effect starting this Monday, 22nd April. This is a result of the increased demand for irrigation noted by BALTEN, which has risen above normal levels in the past winter months to cope with the unusual warmth during this time of the year.
This situation is more pronounced in the midland areas, and these measures will affect the Valle Guerra, Tejina, and Tacoronte regions throughout the week. The water reserves have reached record lows, prompting a solution to be sought during spring and with an eye towards the summer.

These temporary restrictions will remain in place until further notice. The modulation, as indicated by Balsas de Tenerife, “can be carried out as long as the availability of water stored in the reservoirs and tanks in the area permits it, not guaranteeing continuous supply under suitable flow and pressure conditions based on the current demand”.
