Eight out of every 10 young people from Tenerife have suffered sexist violence

The data is “chilling”: eight out of ten young people from Tenerife between 17 and 20 years old claim to have suffered some type of sexist violence. The statistic appears in the recent study carried out by the Tenerife Council to prepare the Prevention Plan for Preadolescents, Adolescents and Young People. The person who calls the figure “chilling” is the first president in the history of the insular Corporation, Rosa Davila (Canarian Coalition), which leads her to assure that “we have to denounce and act.”

Hence the Cabildo of Tenerife have made a great effort to promote equality and the fight against gender violence in its campaign on the occasion of the commemoration next Saturday, the 25th, of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. 25N: do not share sexist violence, mobilize is the motto of a campaign that was presented yesterday by the insular Corporation.

The program is aimed especially at young men through a positive message that values the voices of boys who confront sexist violence that is carried out in digital environments, mainly through mobile phones, the Cabildo says in a statement. This is intended to make visible those who treat them with respect, those who ask for equal treatment for them, those who do not humiliate, do not control, and do not share content of violence against women. The campaign features the participation of Renzzo El Selector, a DJ with a wide following among the young population of Tenerife. Under the expression “Good Vibra Movement”, already used in a previous campaign, he sends a positive message of respect, action against gender violence and equality.

It will reach 88,000 young people

The Tenerife campaign has a wide presence in digital media, including social networks and music apps, and also in cinema, LED screens and signage on street furniture. Thanks to this initiative, it will be possible to reach more than 88,000 young people. The cost of the initiative amounts to a total of 42,048 euros and a duration of 21 days.

Rosa Dávila details that this campaign “aims above all for men to become accomplices of all those women who feel violated and do not reproduce this type of sexist behavior.”

For her part, the insular director of Equality, Patricia León, highlights the importance of «prevention at these early ages“They are our future and we need them to join us, to be our allies, in order to achieve a society where personal relationships are developed from a plane of effective equality.”
