The Cabildo of Tenerife and the Fénix Canarias Association launch the Tótems Tenerife project on the recovery of the forest affected by the fire that started in mid-August and was declared extinguished last Friday. This initiative aims to collect photos of the mountain for two years and create a timelapse of its evolution thanks to the citizens by placing 20 wooden totems on tracks, trails and viewpoints that will make it easier for the population to take their photographs. The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, and the president of Fénix Canarias, Juan Guzmán, signed the agreement through which this initiative will be carried out on Friday. The event also included the Minister of Natural Environment, Sustainability and Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez; Fred’s Marketing Director. Olsen, Marina González; the regional delegate in the Canary Islands of Redeia, Ainara Irigoyen, and the manager of Ayagaures Medio Ambiente, Antonio Díaz, representing the companies that sponsor the project.

Tótems Tenerife aims to involve citizens in the observation and care of nature, turning them into agents capable of capturing the evolution of the forest after the fire. For two years, the totems will serve as fixed structures that will allow residents and visitors to photograph the landscape and upload the images to the website or social networks using the hashtag #TótemsTenerife. These images will facilitate the creation of a timelapse of the evolution of the landscape that will allow Fénix Canarias to explain how ecosystems develop after a fire.

The location of the totems can be consulted at www.fenixcanarias.org and they cover pine forest, monteverde and summit scrub ecosystems. Rosa Dávila thanked the Fénix Canarias initiative and the support of Fred.Olsen Express, Redeia and the Pérez Moreno group, “for launching this environmental education initiative.”
