It has been a year since Reciclos, the Return and Reward System (SDR) developed by Ecoembes, arrived in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Since then, more than 5,500 users have joined this system, obtaining rewards for recycling their cans and plastic beverage bottles in one of the 970 yellow containers on the streets that have this technology.

The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, applauded the work of Ecoembes and indicated that “we must continue promoting initiatives of this type since for the City Council, any activity that contributes to the care of the environment is a priority.”

The Councilor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife, pointed out that “it is excellent news that, one year after the installation of this system, we can count more than 5,500 users, which indicates that communication on recycling is giving its results. fruits and that society is more aware of the care and protection of the environment.”

For his part, the manager of Ecoembes in the Canary Islands, Juan Carlos Arranz, stated that “the arrival of Reciclos to Santa Cruz de Tenerife would not have been possible without the active collaboration of the City Council and, of course, without the involvement of the citizens who have decided to use this innovative recycling system. One year after its implementation in the city, we have been able to verify that the commitment to recycling packaging is increasingly present in our society and, in addition, thanks to this system we have the opportunity to collaborate with social and environmental projects at the same time. “We take care of our environment.”

Through this Return and Reward System (SDR), citizens of the region have redeemed more than 245,000 Recycles, with which they have been able to collaborate with social and environmental associations, while promoting the circularity of packaging, that is, that they have a second life. Specifically, they have been able to contribute to 7 collective projects, among which the Neotropic Foundation stands out, for the protection of Canarian nature; Coats and Smiles, to cover the basic needs of families and social groups in vulnerable situations; o Apanate, which has the Family Respite Program aimed at families with dependent ASD people.

On the other hand, we have also collaborated with the Unidos Por Ti Association, to provide basic goods to vulnerable groups; the La Asunción Center in the La Alegría neighborhood, which provides school support; the Avanza Comprehensive Social Center, which brings resources to families; and the Nodus-Andares Project, focused on the labor insertion of vulnerable people.

How does it work

To use this system, citizens only have to download the free Reciclos application and, at home, scan the barcode of the can or plastic bottle they want to recycle before throwing it into the bin.

Once on the street, when you go to the yellow container with your packaging bag, you must deposit it there and scan the QR code on the container. This Return and Reward System also has machines, in which users must deposit all their cans and plastic bottles of drinks and scan the QR that the machine will display.
