The opposition forces the Icodense Government to recover the election of party queens

Icod de los Vinos approves recovering the queen election galas. The initiative was agreed upon by the municipal plenary session after a joint motion of Canarian Coalition (CC) and the Popular Party (PP). The government group of Alternativa Icodense (8 councilors) voted against and PSOE (2 councillors), while they did so in favor of CC (7 councillors) and the PP (4 councillors). Specifically, the agreement proposes leave without effects the decision announced by the mayor, Javier Sierra, a few weeks ago in relation to the cancellation of the galas election of the Queen.

The above means that Candelaria remains the only municipality of Tenerife that stops holding these types of contests. Yes, there are two other municipalities in the Archipelago that are in the same situation, such as Tuineje (Fuerteventura) and Santa Cruz de La Palma.

In the case of Icodense, the proposal includes the recovery of the queens’ election galas in the municipality’s festivities, following the approaches of the Non-Sexist Protocol of the Cabildo de Tenerife. The decision, which has been approved in plenary session, marks a “significant milestone” in the promotion of gender equality and inclusion in the town.

The approved proposal implies the revocation of the decision announced by the Mayor a few weeks ago, in which the cancellation of the queen election galas had been determined. Now, the municipality of Icod de los Vinos once again takes a step forward in celebrating these festive activities.

Among the highlights of the proposal is compliance with the Non-Sexist Protocol. «The recovery of the queens’ election galas will be carried out strictly following the Non-Sexist Protocol established by the Tenerife Cabildo. This guarantees that These events are inclusive and respectful of gender equality», says the press release. It also includes participation: “The proposal aims to involve the community in the organization and development of the election galas, promoting the active participation of various social sectors of the municipality.”

Added to the above is the commitment to equality. “The approval of this motion reinforces the commitment of the Icod de los Vinos City Council to gender equality and the fight against sexist behavior in the field of festive celebrations,” they state.

The spokesperson for the Popular Party in the Icod de los Vinos City Council, Cory Yanes, expressed her satisfaction with the approval of this motion, and highlighted the “importance of keeping festive traditions alive, always with a focus on equality and respect.”

For her part, the spokesperson for the Canarian Coalition in the municipality, Mercedes Vera, highlights that “with the approval of this CC and PP proposal, the aim is to continue the strategy initiated in the previous mandate of celebrating the election galas prioritizing culture.” and the values from the perspective of equality, gender, inclusion and diversity to eradicate sexist behavior.
