The Plenary of Icod Town Hall of Wines approved on Tuesday a motion presented by the Popular Party (PP) and jointly amended by the Canarian Coalition (CC) that will allow the recovery of the galas for the election of the queens in the festivities in honor of the Holy Christ of El Calvario, after the cancellation announcement made a few weeks ago by the mayor, Javier Sierra (Icodense Alternative).

The proposal went ahead with the votes against of the eight councilors of the Alternativa Icodense Government group and the two of the PSOE, and the favorable vote of those of CC (seven councilors) and PP (four). The last two opposition groups rejected, in turn, the government’s attempt to remedy it through “talent rain” contests and the PSOE’s attempt to leave it on the table.

In this way, the plenary agreement obliges us to revoke the Government’s decision and strictly comply with the Non-Sexist Protocol established by the Tenerife Council. This ensures that these events are inclusive and respectful of gender equality.

It is also urged that the community be involved in the organization and development of the election galas, promoting the active participation of various social sectors of the municipality and also reinforcing the Council’s commitment to gender equality and the fight against sexist behavior in the scope of festive celebrations.

The PP spokesperson and author of the motion, Coromoto Yanes, criticized the “incoherence” of the Mayor’s proposal not to suspend all the galas. “If he had eliminated them all, as happened in Candelaria, we would have supported him. We understand that galas are sexist, but that there are other ways to do it, I don’t think that banning is the solution,” she stressed.

For her part, the nationalist councilor Tania Gutiérrez, who defended the proposal, made it clear that her party “is in favor of supporting all galas in which the population decides to participate freely, prioritizing values from a gender perspective, inclusion and diversity instead to make a decision without consensus with the citizens. We cannot go against what the people and the commercial fabric want,” she said.

Asked about the possibility of a rapprochement with CC for the sake of a possible motion of censure, the PP spokesperson made it clear that both political formations “have come together for a motion that has divided the municipality and that is coherent. I believe that the majority of the votes have come together to reach an agreement that the people were asking for. That does not mean that we are talking, thinking or negotiating a possible motion of censure,” Coromoto Yanes finally clarified.
