The mayor of the City Council of El Rosario, scholastic gilhas denounced the situation experienced by users of the Tenerife II Penitentiary Center after the cut of the water supply generated by the fire that affects the Island. The Consistory has put tanks at the service of the prison to guarantee the supply.

The president has explained in Canarian Television that the upper part of La Esperanza had no supply yesterday afternoon. “Neither the town nor the prison have water. We have to open spurts ”, he assured.

Escolástico Gil has stated that he has been warning four years both the prison management and the Government Delegation and the Ministry of Defense of the need to install their own water supply infrastructure for emergency situations. “There are even reports from 11 years ago, but they have not paid attention,” he protested.

According to data provided by the mayor, between April and May, the prison consumed more than 8 million liters of water and he recalled that the center has more inhabitants than some municipalities on the Island that do have their own water tank.

“These things have to be solved when critical situations arrive. The Administration cannot put on this show, leaving the City Council alone to face a crisis like this while the town is also without water”.

From the Diputación del Común everything possible is done

The deputy of the Common, Rafael Yanes, has reported that the inmates of the center have gone two days without showering, the laundry remains closed and the general facility is connected twice a day so that the inmates can use the cistern. “This means that from the time users use the toilet until they flush the cistern, hours pass,” he explains.

In view of the emergency situation, an ex officio action has been opened and work is being done to “do everything possible”. Likewise, he recalls that the prison cannot be evacuated because the inmates are deprived of liberty, “but that does not imply that other rights are violated,” he insists.

In addition, it has corrected the information that was given yesterday, ensuring that two bottles of water are delivered per person per day from the prison management. “I know that they do everything possible, but it is a matter that the State must solve,” he recalls.

The Ministry of Defense is providing water to the center

The director of the Tenerife II Penitentiary Center, María Victoria Bernaola, has clarified that from day one an attempt has been made for the inmates to have three liters of water a day to drink, as well as to maintain the minimum kitchen services.

According to what he told on Canary Television, the Government Delegation contacted members of the Ministry of Defense who have facilitated the supply of water up to 64,000 liters. “Users are already being able to clean themselves, although leaving spaces of time,” he explained.

The director insists that this is not the time to point out the guilty, but to find solutions.
