‘The Telegraph’ places Garachico among the 10 best coastal towns in the country

The prestigious British newspaper The Telegraph places the northern town of Garachico among the ten best coastal towns in Spain. La Villa y Puerto is part of a select list that includes a total of 20 Spanish coastal delights recommended for tourists from United Kingdom. Garachico enters the national Top 10, in eighth place, only behind Sanlúcar de Barrameda (1), Cadaqués (2), Tarifa (3), Sitges (4), Estepona (5), Llanes (6) and Altea (7). And it surpasses towns of proven beauty and tourist tradition such as Baiona, Cudillero, Denia, Combarro, Nerja, Comillas, Mojácar, Peñíscola or Fornells.

The Tenerife journalist and writer Santiago Díaz Bravo, based in London since 2012, highlights that The Telegraph is «a newspaper published in London, of a conservative tendency, which together with the Financial Times, The Times and Guardian It is one of the quality newspapers in the United Kingdom, far from the tabloids. Regarding its circulation, the latest data indicates that it is the second newspaper with the largest circulation in London, only surpassed by The Times. In addition, it is not the first time that this medium refers to Garachico and its attractions, which include what they call the other Islands Canary Islandsthat part that is not the best known by the British public ».

The author of this classification is Annie Bennett, travel journalist and specialist in Spain, a country that he has been traveling for more than three decades, both on the mainland and on the islands. She is the expert on Spain for the travel section of the newspaper The Telegraph and, in addition, she is a regular collaborator of The Times, Guardian and other media.

Annie Bennett declared to THE DAY that «having to choose only 20 beautiful coastal towns in mainland Spain, the Balearic and Canary Islands It has been a very pleasant task, but also super difficult, since of course there are many wonderful places. However, I immediately thought that Garachico had to feature because of its unusual appearance, its singular architecture, its history and, of course, the beauty that it offers in every corner”.

“Since many Britons return year after year to Tenerife, I hope that you see normal not to stay all day in your hammocks, although there is nothing wrong with this if that is what you want, of course. And choose, instead, to move around the island, discovering beautiful places, hiking and trying both the gastronomy and the excellent wines that they have there, ”says Bennett. In his opinion, Garachico should be one of the outstanding places for those hotel getaways for visitors from the United Kingdom and he highlights that “it has been quite a pioneer in the Canary Islands in promoting itself as a quality, more authentic tourism site, offering value additional, with charming hotels and shops and restaurants that offer more traditional experiences”.

The mayor of Garachico, José Heriberto González (CC), does not hide the satisfaction that each new recognition of the beauty, authenticity and attractiveness of his town produces, “the only one in the Canary Islands that enters that Top 10”. only the port of moganin Gran Canaria, manages to sneak into that list, albeit at number 20.

Repeated recognitions

Garachico is a municipality with contrasting attractions used to appearing in classifications that highlight its beauty, mixture of lava, sea and heritage. In 2021, Villa y Puerto officially became part of the Association of the Most Beautiful Towns in Spain, which at that time had just 104 locations throughout the country. In December 2022, Garachico was chosen as the most beautiful town in the province, one of the two most beautiful in the Canary Islands and one of the 50 most beautiful towns in Spain by more than 5,000 readers of the travel and photography portal Travel Photo Magazine. It has also appeared in the Top 10 most beautiful coastal towns in Spain of skyscanner or in the national Top 16 of lonely planet.| RS
