The Town Hall of Arona awarded the works for the rehabilitation and reform of the 70 social houses that make up the Virgen del Carmen Urbanization, in Guargacho. The works must be executed within a period of 14 months. With this, the local government wants to correct the deterioration of this group of buildings built decades ago.

With the award of the work, the process started in 2018 is completed and followed, with a meeting held by the mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, and the then Councilor for Housing, Francisco Marichal, with the previous director of the Institute Housing Canary, María Isabel Santana. A preview of the file attributable to the current head of the municipal area, councilor Julia Raquel Morales.

This is the first action of this type that is carried out in a public promotion of the municipality

The Virgen del Carmen urbanization will be the first social housing development in the history of the municipality of Arona to be submitted to the works necessary for its rehabilitation and integral regeneration. This enclave of Guargacho consists of 70 homes of “considerable age and with various problems and damages” whose repair work has never been undertaken since they were built, “which has made their rehabilitation one of the priorities of the government group” .

After completing the file of the Virgen del Carmen Urban Regeneration and Renewal Aid (ARRU) project, the Arona City Council also intends to continue the public housing rehabilitation process with the two urbanizations of Cabo Blanco (San Martín de Porres and Santa Rita ), Arona (Brother Pedro) and Vento (Mazapé), until benefiting the 375 residents who own them.

The administrative procedure that the Consistory must complete in the case of the 101 homes that make up the Hermano Pedro and Vento developments ended a few weeks ago, so that, once the processing is completed at the Canary Islands Housing Institute, residents can notarize their houses.

Five years of procedures

The process for all of them to be included by the Government of the Canary Islands in an Urban Regeneration and Renewal Area (ARRU), in charge of the State Housing Plan, began in 2018 and was promoted within the framework of a meeting held by José Julián Mena and the then municipal head of Housing, Francisco Marichal, with who was director of the Canary Islands Housing Institute (Icavi), María del Pino de Lion.

Of the total investment required to rehabilitate the 70 houses of Guargachoan initiative that Arona will carry out in collaboration between the four public administrations, the Ministry of Public Works is responsible for a contribution of 995,600 euros, the Government of Canary Islands another 746,700 euros, the Cabildo de Tenerife It must finance 535,800 euros and 273,900 euros are those added by the Aronero City Council, which is also the Institution responsible for the project and the bidding for the works.

The 375 social housing that Arona currently has are concentrated in the Virgen del Carmen urbanizations (Guargacho), with 70; San Martín de Porres and Santa Rita (Cabo Blanco), with 104 and 100 homes, respectively, and the Hermano Pedro and Mazapé (Vento) developments, with 101 social homes.
