El Sauzal cider shines again in Asturias in 2022

Posma ciderwhich began to be produced in 2011 in The Sauzal with pippin apples north of Tenerifehas shone again International Gala Ciders Show 2022held a few days ago in Asturiaswhere he won a first prize and a silver medal, andn competition with 230 ciders from 21 countries in Europe and America. Sauzalera cider managed to be one of the 13 with the highest rating (Premium), specifically in the sweet glass cider category, and one of the 15 silver medals, in this case in the sparkling cider section rough.

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Javier Grill (PSOE), highlights the importance of this cider and, especially, of its main ingredient: the pippin apple. A traditional variety that is grown in the midlands of the island. In his opinion, «Posma cider has become a product gourmet unique, highly appreciated and valued, to which since the Cabildo of Tenerife We support your marketing through Island Winerieswith the aim of contributing to maintaining its production».

Parrilla explains that “we started marketing Posma in February 2021 and, since then, we have sold almost 5,000 bottles, 1,247 of 75 centiliters and 3,360 of 33 centilitres». A quality drink that, according to the director, «is not the first time that it has been recognized and awarded internationally. In fact, it is the fourth consecutive first prize received from the International Gala Ciders Show», which is celebrated precisely in Asturias, one of the world cradles of cider.

From neglect to prestige

the mayor of sauzalero, Mariano Perez (CC), highlights that this new recognition shows that Posma is “an extraordinary cider that always achieves recognition abroad, although it is a little more difficult to market in the Canary Islands.” The northern president recalls that «Posma practically came out of nowhereat a time when pippin apples were normally abandoned on farms».

“For the municipality of The Sauzal, the pippin apple is the queen of the midlands and we have been betting on its conservation and enhancement for quite some time. Both for direct sale, since it is ideal for consumption directly or as an ingredient in desserts, and for use in the production of this pioneering cider on the island of Tenerife”, remarks Mariano Pérez. Not in vain El Sauzal is the main producer on the Island, with more than 27 hectares dedicated to this crop revitalized since 2011 thanks to the local cider.

The jury for the awards International Gala Ciders Show 2022 It is made up of a team appointed by the Asturies XXI Foundation, which is the convening entity, chaired by the renowned expert Manuel G. Bust, and a representative from each of the wineries participating in the event. To eliminate the possibility that in the blind tasting a jury recognizes a certain cider and values ​​it much higher or lower than it deserves for personal reasons, the highest scores and also the lowest of each cider are discarded.

It competed with 230 ciders from 21 countries in Europe and America

These awards confirm the quality of Sauzalera cider, a project that began in 2005, but which did not become the commercial brand of the first cider made in Spain until 2011. Canary Islands, with 100% Tenerife raw materials. In previous editions of this International Gala Cider Fair, Posma has received other important prizes in Asturias: the first prize for the best cider rough, in 2014 and in 2019; the third prize for the best cider rough, in 2016; the first prize for the best sweet cider with exogenous carbon, in 2020; the gold medal as «the best sparkling cider rough», and another silver medal for its small format version, in 2021. And this year, the first prize for its sweet glass cider, and the silver medal again for its sparkling cider rough. A total of eight international awards, with four first prizes, in just 11 years with a brilliant and tasty cider history.
