12.5 million euros to purify wastewater from the Valle de La Orotava

Twelve and a half million euros and eleven kilometers of pipes is the bet Council of Tenerife to curb wastewater in the Valle de La Orotava. Yesterday, the Orotavense nucleus of La Florida hosted the presentation of the advances in the actions to channel the sewage from the municipalities of Santa Úrsula, La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz and Los Realejos towards the regional sewage treatment plant of Valle de La Orotava, located in Cross port. These are works that are included in the agreement signed between the Cabildo and Acuaes.

The execution period is 21 months and the actions began at the beginning of March, while its completion is scheduled for December 2023. “The objective of the project is to build a network of sanitation pipes to channel wastewater,” he says. the information provided by the insular institution. “It consists of a total of about ten sections of pipeline distributed among the four municipalities, with a total length of almost twelve kilometers”, he details.

The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Peter Martinyesterday visited the section corresponding to the Los Gómez La Florida collector, where he was accompanied by the Minister for Sustainable Development, Javier Rodríguez; the sub-delegate of the Government, Jesús Javier Plata; the mayor of La Orotava, Francisco Linares, and several municipal councilors, as well as staff from the Insular Water and Acuaes Council.

“One of the most serious environmental problems that exist on the island of Tenerife is the discharge of sewage into the sea,” said the island president during the visit. “We must bear in mind that we are in a heavily polluted region because there are a high number of cesspools in the area,” said the Councilor for Sustainable Development of the Cabildo, Javier Rodríguez, who also recalled that “the directive must be complied with in the proper treatment of wastewater and also put an end to the problem of contamination of the aquifer, which is produced by the existence of these wells». The ultimate intention of this plan is “to be able to take all wastewater to the regional treatment plant, which we are also expanding to achieve this end.”

For his part, the mayor of La Orotava, Francis Linaresnoted that these channeling works “are essential for the sustainable development of wastewater management”, and analyzed that, “by tradition and culture, the houses in the rural neighborhoods of the municipality are not usually connected to the sanitation networks.” However, he saw a future possibility in this action.

According to the data given this Monday from the Tenerife Council, the Los Martillos, Los Cuartos, La Florida and San Jerónimo collectors are currently under construction, and the action consists of a total of about ten sections of pipe distributed among the four municipalities, with a total length of almost 12 kilometers.
