Hotel businessmen and merchants from the Golf del Sur urbanization, on the coast of the municipality of San Miguel de Abona, denounce a wave of assaults on establishments and robberies of pedestrians, and ask for more presence of agents of the Civil Guard and local Police, especially from night, when, they say, most crimes are recorded.
Only in the last month there is evidence of at least three assaults on a bar, a cafeteria and a supermarket, one of them in broad daylight when an individual armed with a knife broke into the cafeteria with customers and took the proceeds from the box. In his flight he came to face a waiter with his weapon who came out after him. The other businesses, located in an area very close to a five-star hotel, have also been attacked at dawn despite having video surveillance systems, whose cameras allowed recording the moment of entry and exit of criminals to the premises. “This is embarrassing and ashamed, every day there is an assault on a business or a robbery on the street, especially at night, because there is no light and there is no police, we are unprotected,” lamented one of the affected businessmen, who preferred not revealing his identity and that he was an indirect witness, a few days ago, to the robbery of an elderly British couple.
“They entered the premises asking if we sold English press, I told them they could buy it at the San Blas shopping center, which is less than five minutes away on foot. After an hour they came back and he asked if he had left his wallet. They had stolen it in what they went from here to there! It makes you angry. Poor old men! ”, The owner of the premises told this newspaper.
High season
The situation, merchants and neighbors denounce, has worsened for a month, coinciding with the start of the high tourist season. “All the neighbors tell you, there are a lot of robberies now that more tourism is arriving,” they say.
Precisely, the last crime they have evidence of was suffered by a tourist who had just arrived on the island and was spending her first night in an aparthotel in the area. The next morning, when he woke up, his suitcase and wallet with the money had disappeared.
