Increased Support for Dependents: Canary Islands Launches a New Home Assistance Model

The Canary Islands Government approved an investment of 17 million euros on Monday to launch a new model of specialised home help service in Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Gomera, and Tenerife.

The agreement also includes the implementation of a system for monitoring and quality control of home services aimed at individuals in a state of dependency.

The measure seeks to strengthen support for dependent individuals, in collaboration with the island councils.

To achieve this, the current model of providing this service in the affected islands will be modified.

The General Directorate of Dependency, attached to the Ministry of Social Welfare, can now begin the tendering process for the service, which focuses on promoting users’ autonomy and preventing their disconnection from their family environment.

The specialised home help service will provide support to individuals in a state of dependency—or at risk of being so— to meet basic daily needs while encouraging their stay at home and community integration.

This aims to prevent isolation and unwanted loneliness through support that ranges from companionship to household tasks such as cleaning, laundry, or cooking.

The administrative contracting of the service will be divided into two lots.

The first, valued at 16,882,300 euros, corresponds to the Home Help Service itself.

The second, at 117,700 euros, is allocated for quality control.

Both budgets cover the financial years 2025 and 2026, and respond to the Canary Islands Government’s commitment “to improve the care for dependent people in the archipelago,” the Administration states in a press release.
