The Local Police of Granadilla de Abona has strengthened inspections to detect illegal transport services at the airport Tenerife South, such as car rentals between individuals without a licence, irregular use of caravans, and professional intrusiveness that affects the taxi sector and legal transport.
In a statement sent this Tuesday, the Granadilla de Abona Town Hall notes that it is taking action against irregular transport at Tenerife South Airport through control and surveillance efforts, as well as reinforcing road safety at one of the main points of entry and exit for visitors in Canary Islands.
The Town Hall indicates that it will continue these operations and will collaborate, within its capabilities, with the relevant authorities to achieve a “safe, orderly, and respectful” airport environment for the professional sector.
Irregular Practices
In this regard, the Councillor for Security, Candelaria Rodríguez, states that the Tenerife South Airport sees between 30,000 and 40,000 passengers daily, rising to as many as 60,000 during peak season, making it a strategic point where transport from across the island converges.
“Irregular practices cause confusion for tourists, give a poor image of the destination, and provide a substandard service that does not match the level of an international airport,” she adds.
For his part, the Councillor for Mobility, René Oval, emphasises that this work is vital to protect the taxi sector and ensure fair competition against those who break the law.
“From the Town Hall, we are acting within our competences to organise transport, improve the experience of those who visit us, and defend the taxi sector and the professionals who operate legally,” Oval adds.
Fines
Transport infringements can incur penalties exceeding 4,000 euros, and the complaints are forwarded to the Transport Department of the Cabildo of Tenerife, which holds the powers in this area.
In addition, the Local Police periodically conducts speed checks —limited to 40 km/h around the airport— and ensures that VTC vehicles access only if they have a prior reservation, in compliance with the current regulations.
