Clavijo Brands it “Indecent” for Regions Not to Aid Young Migrants; Warns of Potential Prosecutor Involvement

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 26 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, said this Thursday that it would be “indecent, absurd and unsupportive” if the autonomous communities do not collaborate with the distribution of unaccompanied migrant minors because it would also be “illegal” and they would have to “pay in the courts”.

In statements to journalists regarding the agreement reached with the central government concerning the nearly 1,200 minors seeking asylum, he said they are going to propose that if the national police officer taking the minor to an autonomous community does not find cooperation in reception, it will be referred to the Prosecutor’s Office and “it would already be the Judicial Power or the Prosecutor’s Office for Minors” that would urge the reception.

Clavijo criticised the “political bravado” of the communities refusing to host minors and hopes that with a view to the Sectoral Childhood Conference this Friday, the “spectacle” will be avoided and collaboration with the archipelago will be assumed.

Therefore, he hopes that two other decrees will be approved, which do not need to be validated in Congress, to provide “agility and efficiency” in the development of the decree and the distribution of the documents, and that public officials will have the legal clearance to carry out the transfer.

Regarding the agreement on minors seeking asylum, he indicated that it is “clear” and complies with what had been demanded by the Supreme Court, such as the immediate registration of more than 800 minors in the international protection network and the creation of an inter-administrative committee that will analyse each case in order to put an end to the “overcrowding”.

“We have to get to work,” he indicated, but he was satisfied that “the light at the end of the tunnel” is beginning to be seen.
