From this Friday, anyone who wishes can sit in front of a grand piano and share their music with those passing through the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. The instrument, installed in the main building’s hall, will be openly available as part of an initiative aiming to humanise the hospital environment through art.

The donation has been made possible thanks to the Fundación MAPFRE Canarias, which has provided the piano as part of the activities organised by the hospital to commemorate European Music Day.

During the handover event, pianist Gabriel Álvarez Doreste offered a concert with well-known pieces such as Viva la Vida (Coldplay), Mamma Mia (ABBA), Hey Jude (The Beatles), and the Radetzky March (Johann Strauss), among other pieces that marked the day’s celebratory atmosphere.

The event was attended by the Director of the Tenerife Health Area, Rafael Martín; the representative of the Directorate General for Patient and Chronicity, Carlos Fernández Barreto; the hospital’s Director of Nursing, Mercedes García; the Director of Management, Gianfranco Bagnaresi, and the Vice President of the Fundación MAPFRE Canarias, Isabel Suárez.

With this addition, the centre expands the actions of its Humanisation Plan, which has already hosted performances by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and the Tenerife Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. It is also the third such space promoted by the Fundación MAPFRE Canarias in the Archipelago’s hospitals.

The piano will remain in the hall so that music, with all its emotional and therapeutic benefits, can be played daily in one of the most frequented areas of the hospital complex.
