La Laguna and the Fundación CajaCanarias Join Forces Against the Digital Divide for the Elderly

Four senior associations in the locality will host the entity’s project ‘Impulsando en Digital’, focused on facilitating the safe use of online resources

The Service for the Engagement of Seniors and Healthy Ageing in La Laguna, directed by the Social Welfare Area and managed by Muvisa, is expanding its training offer and reinforcing actions aimed at combating the digital divide among people over 60 years old in the locality, thanks to its commitment to collaboration with various entities in the Islands. This week, the municipality has incorporated a new project thanks to the collaboration of Fundación CajaCanarias, which will bring to four venues of senior associations in La Laguna its programme “Impulsando en Digital”, an initiative that aims to provide the group with all the necessary skills and competencies to make safe use of the internet.

The Councillor for Social Welfare, María Cruz, highlights «the impact on daily life and procedures that these actions represent, for which we are strongly committed in our training, leisure, and healthy ageing programme. Having the experience and commitment of entities such as Fundación CajaCanarias is a fundamental contribution to facing the challenge of enabling older people to adapt to a technology that is constantly changing and extending to more daily aspects».

«From carrying out administrative procedures, requesting documentation, or managing medical appointments, technology is a great support to avoid travel and facilitate the daily life of many people with mobility problems or who do not have the necessary family support. We want the seniors of La Laguna to become familiar with all these resources and have all the necessary tools to use them feeling secure», adds the Coordinator of the Seniors Service at Muvisa, Laura García Pérez.

The “Impulsando en Digital” project by Fundación CajaCanarias, now in its third edition and with the collaboration of Fundación Adsis, is precisely aimed at improving the digital skills and competencies of Canary Islands citizens, so that participants can fully benefit from the advantages of technologies that are essential today.

The first session in La Laguna took place this week at the Nueva Generación Seniors Association (El Cardonal) venue, and the upcoming ones will be held on 23rd and 24th June at the San Matías and La Atalaya (Tejina) associations, respectively. Initially, the project will run in four venues, although the Seniors Service is at the disposal of Fundación CajaCanarias to expand the presence of its programme in La Laguna and continue it in the autumn.

The sessions are face-to-face and last approximately one and a half hours. The training is delivered through informative pills, enabling participants to acquire the necessary digital skills and fully benefit from the advantages of digital technologies.

This training will be conducted in collaboration with experts in teaching the use of these technologies to novices or those with limited skills in this field, through fun, participative, and tailored training to their needs. Thus, they will learn to navigate the internet safely, manage social networks and text editors, make purchases, and use specific applications for procedures and services, both from public and private entities, among other topics.

Integration and Independence

“Impulsando en Digital” aims to enable anyone to use ICT safely and responsibly and optimise telematic relations, with the objective of promoting social integration and personal independence. Furthermore, this programme wants to facilitate access to digital information, enhance the use of public and private resources through digital means, acquire or improve digital competencies, and leverage digital technology to improve people’s wellbeing.
