Electric Link Between Tenerife and La Gomera Receives Official Approval
The Government has signed the ministerial order authorising the operational launch of the electric link between Tenerife and La Gomera. The construction of this project, which was completed in February, grants legal status to the new electrical system connecting both islands. This integration is set to take effect on 1 July.
Improved Efficiency and Security of Supply
The authorisation will integrate the existing subsystems of both islands, significantly enhancing efficiency through cost savings in generation. Additionally, it will provide greater security of supply, as the subsystems will support each other. These details were confirmed on Monday by the Ministry for Ecological Transition.
Benefits for La Gomera
These advantages will be particularly important for La Gomera, which will now join a larger, more robust system with increased technical capacity. The Ministry also highlighted that Tenerife will benefit from La Gomera’s renewable energy potential.
Unified Electrical System
The integration is scheduled for 1 July, at which point there will be a single schedule and dispatch for electricity generation, alongside backup needs management and the incorporation of new renewable generation and storage.
This change signifies that, following the construction of the necessary infrastructure, the legal recognition of a unified electrical system across both islands will come into effect. This system will operate under a coherent regulation, operation, and planning framework that aligns with the physical realities of the region. The ministerial order will soon be published in the Official State Gazette (BOE), the Ministry confirmed.
