Between the 14th and 20th of July, 132 tests were conducted for this type of substance, resulting in a total of 31 positives.
The Local Police of La Laguna has recently collaborated with the Directorate-General for Traffic in the development of a preventive campaign to control drugs and alcohol at various points in the municipality. This initiative, which is being promoted by the DGT at a national level, took place between the 14th and 20th of July.
During this period, 106 alcohol tests were conducted in La Laguna, with 12 of them resulting positive through the administrative channel and three through the criminal channel. Regarding drug detection, 26 tests were carried out, yielding six positives for cocaine, one for amphetamine, eight for cannabis, and one for methamphetamine.
The councillor for Citizen Security of the Council, Badel Albelo, emphasised the importance of “actions of this nature to enhance surveillance on our roads and prevent serious incidents in our municipal thoroughfares, as a result of substances that pose a serious risk to other drivers and pedestrians in the vicinity”.
Through this collaboration with the DGT, the Local Police has established random controls at strategic points in the municipality where higher accident rates have been recorded due to these offences and where local residents have raised concerns about risky circumstances such as reckless driving or vehicles exceeding the speed limit.
The Directorate-General for Traffic considers the participation of municipalities such as San Cristóbal de La Laguna to be of great importance, as although public awareness regarding alcohol consumption while driving is on the rise, the same cannot be said for drugs, and certain consumption habits persist in some sectors, especially in certain urban areas of Spain.
