The General Secretary of the PSOE in Tenerife, Tamara Raya, said this Thursday that on the island, the only emergency yet to be declared is due to “political ineptitude,” following the declarations of other emergencies such as migration, housing, water, technology, and energy during the two years of CC and PP governance.
Raya made this assessment during a press conference held to review the two years of Rosa Dávila (CC) as president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, a time during which 70% of the CC and PP programme has been fulfilled, according to Dávila.
However, the Socialist leader questioned what Rosa Dávila means by that 70% of compliance, as she reminded us that “70% of zero is zero, and 70% of nothing is nothing.”
The spokesman for the Socialist group in the Cabildo of Tenerife, Aarón Afonso, asserted that the insular corporation left over 174 million euros unexecuted in its first year of mandate and more than 191 million in the second.
He added that the Institute of Social and Socio-Healthcare Care (IASS) of the Cabildo of Tenerife has failed to execute 97 million euros over those two years, and the Insular Water Council has not executed more than 85 million.
Thus, Aarón Afonso continued, in the first two years of CC and PP government in the Cabildo of Tenerife, more than 548 million euros have been left unexecuted.
Furthermore, according to the spokesman for the Socialist group, the quality of life for citizens has not improved, and fiscal rules have been breached, which has led to the approval of an adjustment plan that will be in force in 2025 and 2026 and will condition spending policies.
These limitations are already evident in budget execution, so that in the first six months of this year, it has been 35 percent compared to 40 percent last year.
Aarón Afonso commented that the budget is being executed in advertising and propaganda, as he added, the execution exceeded 100% last year, and so far this year it has reached 70%.
The General Secretary of the PSOE in Tenerife stated that the public perceives that the major problems have even worsened, and thus the congestion on the roads persists, with the investment in public transport being “non-existent” except for the 250 buses purchased by the previous government team (PSOE), while the tram has been on strike for 17 months.
Regarding housing, Tamara Raya noted that despite the repeated announcements from the Cabildo of Tenerife, “not a single key has been handed over,” which led her to question where the 70 percent of execution is.
She also referred to social matters, focusing on dependency to criticise the “repeated breaches” marked by an increase in waiting lists, and denounced that in La Victoria, there is a completed centre for the elderly that has not received funding from the City Council to start its operation.
The Socialist leader has also criticised that in light of the congestion problems at the Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC) and the issues beginning to appear at the Universitario de la Candelaria, expansions are not taking place in the hospitals in the north and south.
The “cherry on the cake,” in Tamara Raya’s opinion, is the proposal to impose the so-called forestry cent, which would apply a tax of 0.02 cents per litre of fuel, with the revenue being allocated to environmental protection measures.
The General Secretary of the PSOE in Tenerife pointed out that this tax penalises the citizens of the island, while the Cabildo of Tenerife refuses to implement a tourist tax from which Canarians would be exempt.
For this reason, she announced that the PSOE will present a comprehensive amendment against the implementation of the “green cent.”
