La Laguna celebrates the 19th edition of the Night of the Donkeys this Thursday.

This event will also serve as a setting for the award ceremony of the decorated balconies and windows competition for the San Benito Abad 2025 festivities.

The city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna will host a new edition of the Night of the Donkeys this Thursday, 17th July, starting at 19:00. This event, part of the San Benito Abad 2025 programme, aims to pay a deserved tribute to the Federation of Native Canary Breeds and to share with the people of La Laguna a showcase of different animals linked to the primary sector of the islands.

The Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, recalled that “this gathering brings together a large number of people of all ages each year around the traditional livestock of the archipelago.” He further detailed that in 2025, nearly 70 animals and several folk groups will participate, and announced that a special recognition will be given to the Majorero donkey during the preliminary events and in the Romería Chica itself.

For his part, the Councillor for Festivities, Dailos González, stated that “this is not just a simple event, but an exaltation of the work of the livestock farmers of the Canary Islands who throughout the year strive for the survival of an animal as closely linked to our history as the donkey, which unfortunately is at risk of extinction.”

The planned route by the City Council’s Department of Festivities in La Laguna will start from the Plaza del Adelantado, then proceed along Calle Obispo Rey Redondo, Calle El Tizón, Calle Herradores, Calle Marqués de Celada, Calle Teobaldo Power, Avenida Lucas Vega, and Calle Antonio Hernández Arrón, concluding the journey at Avenida Embajador Alberto de Armas. At this final location, a toast will be offered to all participants and the attending public who accompany the procession.
