Tenerife Encourages Coastal Clean-Up Activities and Invasive Plant Removal Among Residents

The Office of Participation and Environmental Volunteering coordinates actions to be carried out in Arafo, La Laguna, La Guancha, El Sauzal and Arico.

The Cabildo of Tenerife promotes various cleaning activities along the coast and the eradication of invasive exotic flora among the public. The Office of Participation and Environmental Volunteering of the Cabildo coordinates seven initiatives across the municipalities of Arafo, La Laguna, La Guancha, El Sauzal, and Arico.

Arafo hosts a busy day today (Thursday 10) led by the Scout group Atamán with three distinct activities. In the morning, two workshops on pollinators and bats will be held at the Articosa Scout Centre. Both workshops have the support of the Tenerife Scout Federation and the Terramare Association and fall under the ‘Citizen Science’ project. In the afternoon, the ‘Art and Environment’ project will take place, which is a workshop combining art and nature in motion, where scout members will learn about the relationship between the two variables.

On Friday 11 July, the Youth Association Dubina, in collaboration with the La Laguna Council, promotes the ‘Custody of Educational Gardens’ project. This involves a botanical tour for 90 members of the Don Bosco summer camp to discover the native and unique species in the institute’s gardens.

La Guancha will host one of the activities included in its ‘Local Volunteering’ project on Saturday 12, which involves controlling invasive exotic species. In this case, the coastal location of Santo Domingo will be the meeting point for residents to take part in a walk and control the presence of cat’s tail and other invasive plant species. The activity is organised by the La Guancha Council in collaboration with the Amor Seco Association and the A.V. Santo Domingo. Additionally, El Sauzal hosts the ‘Seed Tellers’ project, organised by the local council, focusing on the recovery of traditional seeds and the creation of a database for their study and conservation.

Finally, on Sunday 13 July, the Arico Council and the Terramare Association organise an environmental workshop and waste collection at the coastal site of La Sarnosa. This activity is part of the ‘Coastal Awareness Campaign’ developed by the southern council and has the collaboration of the Keep It Clean Tenerife group.
