Handwritten Non-Ephemeral Communication. Long Live St. Benedict!

We receive so many “WhatsApp” messages that most of them are forgotten in no time, becoming ephemeral. If we want to halt the fleeting nature of what we forget, let’s be proactive and write by hand, promoting the use of postcards or letters as a warmer form of communication.

During the Romería of San Benito, we are once again encouraged to practise and use postcards, a medium that allows us to be present in affectionate and friendly memories. In the Romería, once San Roque has passed, the procession boat Virgen del Carmen, Valle Tabares arrives, paying homage to the presence of the co-patron San Roque on its first sailing. If we approach, as we do with the carts for a toast or to share something to eat, we can take the postcard from the Romería poster and give a hug to someone we care about who is not at the Romería.

Design by Carlos Edel.

If we address the postcard, affix a stamp, and drop it into the Post Office next to Santo Domingo, from Monday or within the following three days, it will receive the attached postmark, spreading smiles and affection to the recipient.

Among the events planned this year to commemorate San Cristóbal de La Laguna’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, following the Christ Festival, the stamped postcard will be distributed during a conference on the latest Romerías, which will be announced in due course.

Let’s enjoy the Romería! Long live San Benito!
