They urge the regional president to convene the parties “with urgency” to resolve the issue

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, APR. (Press Europa) –

The Canary PSOE has labelled Saturday as “an absolute failure” in relation to the mediation efforts of the president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, concerning the conflict between employers and employees in the hospitality sector. This follows the strike that took place on Thursday and Good Friday in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife aimed at reaching an agreement. The party has called for him to urgently gather the parties involved.

In a statement, the Socialist Party has reproached Clavijo for being “incapable” of preventing a strike that has brought an end to “47 years of social peace in the most significant sector in the Canary Islands,” particularly at a time when record levels of revenue are being achieved and the archipelago is a well-established destination.

Specifically, the Secretary of Organisation, Nira Fierro, stated that the reaction from the union members to the proposed pre-agreement put forth by the head of the Canarian Executive reflects “a complete rejection of the employment policies” implemented by his administration.

Fierro also expressed concern over “the notable silence” from the president of the Canary Islands government since “his failure” at the negotiating table, stressing the need to urgently gather the parties and “resume discussions from where they left off.”

Consequently, he stated that the president has personally accepted “the failure” to avert the strike, following “more than a year of escalating tensions due to irresponsible and reckless comments,” despite the Executive having “the tools to facilitate an agreement between the parties.”

Fierro has requested that the President exclude the Minister of Tourism and Employment from the Mediation Meeting: “Unless we are, and it appears we are, dealing with a situation akin to the Palmar case of negligence, or if Clavijo has dismissed him due to his ineffectiveness.”

The Secretary of Socialist Organisation has also condemned the Canary Islands government’s decision to “mandate, as they have done, essential services” within the sector during the strike days: “not only does this infringe upon the right to strike, but it also demonstrates their lack of understanding of the situation they are managing.”

“Now is the time to move towards regional agreements within the framework of an interprofessional agreement for collective bargaining, as the PSOE has proposed in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, despite opposition from the groups that support the government,” commented Fierro.

From the Canary PSOE, the party has extended its support to the workers affected by this conflict, expressing solidarity with their employment demands. “The most vital sector we possess must and can commit to a more equitable distribution of wealth within the Canary Islands.”

“An agreement is urgently required, one that is fair and satisfactory, between the employers and the unions to resolve this situation,” he concluded.
