Revitalizing the Submarine Emissary: A Lifeline for La Orotava Valley

The Cabildo de Tenerife, via the Insular Water Council, has endorsed the call for tender concerning the emergency procedure for the refurbishment of the submarine outfall at La Orotava Valley. This initiative aims to address the crack identified 95 metres off the coast in 2020, with an investment of €2.7 million and an anticipated implementation period of 16 months.

The project involves the replacement of 240 metres of the outfall section with a new, more resilient pipe. To achieve this, it will be essential to demolish and remove the damaged segment of the pipeline, both on land and beneath the sea, as explained on Wednesday during a press briefing by Rosa Dávila, the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife.

Additionally, anchors will be reinforced, and protective measures will be introduced to ensure the safety and effective operation of the new section.

“This is a complex task that should have been initiated four years ago when indicators of poor water quality were already showing signs of deterioration,” remarked Rosa Dávila, who also noted the €1 million in funding from the City Council allocated for various initiatives in the region, including works on the wastewater network of Punta Brava.

The expedited processing of this project adheres to a directive issued by the Council for Ecological Transition and Energy of the Canary Islands Government on July 19, 2024, which called for this rehabilitation to be completed as swiftly as possible within the file for amending the dumping permit from land to sea.

This undertaking complements the establishment of the new regional wastewater treatment plant (EDAR) for La Orotava Valley, the first phase of which was sanctioned by the Plenary of the Cabildo on February 28, with an investment of €20.8 million and an execution timeframe of 24 months.
