Local police intensify, with the arrival of summer, surveillance of electric scooters in tourist areas in the south of the island to reduce risk situations among pedestrians and prevent them from blocking public roads.
If a few weeks ago Arona announced that it had removed a hundred of these vehicles from its streets in the last six months, Santiago del Teide has proceeded in that same time to immobilize and remove more than thirty scooters from public roads for committing various infractions , among them, parking improperly on the sidewalks, in parking lots reserved for people with reduced mobility or in loading and unloading areas.
The City Council chaired by Emilio Navarro confirmed that it has increased surveillance and control, both over private users and rental companies, given the increasing presence of these vehicles in public spaces and with the aim of “ guarantee a perfect harmony” between these, road traffic and pedestrians. Although Santiago del Teide does not yet have a municipal ordinance, the Local Police works with the current regulatory framework.
more complaints
In the case of Arona, and as is the case in other towns in the South, complaints from residents and tourists have increased in recent months in Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Américas, areas in which the taxi sector has even expressed its unease about the proliferation of this means of transport. From the Department of Security advocates “proper use of public space and work to remove obstacles that prevent free movement for all citizens, and that there are no barriers.”
Arona increased vigilance following the fatal hit suffered by an octogenarian pedestrian when he was walking, last summer, along the Paseo de Las Vistas, in Los Cristianos. Adeje has also reinforced the inspection service to prevent the misuse of these vehicles. In the meetings called by the City Council to advance in the drafting of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, an instrument that analyzes mobility in the municipality, various groups have expressed their concern about the future of electric scooters.
The drafting of the plan is expected to be finalized in the coming months.
