Santa Cruz de Tenerife 7 Feb. (Europa Press) –
The Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife recorded 1.8 million vehicles in the passage regime in 2024 within the province, securing the second place in overall passenger traffic (cruise and transport passengers), amounting to 6.8 million individuals in 2024, surpassed only by the Balearic Islands.
Specifically, just over 1.3 million cruisers visited the ports in the province, representing a 19 percent increase compared to 2023, while 5.4 million passengers were transported, a decline of one percent from the previous year, as reported by the public entity in a statement.
Additionally, the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife concluded the year 2024 with growth exceeding the average of the state port system, encompassing varied traffic types from liquid bulk to merchant vessels, along with general merchandise, roll-on/roll-off traffic, cruise passengers, and fuel provision.
These statistics affirm, according to the public entity, the “leadership” of the province in the national standings, maintaining the top position in the movement of passage vehicles and second in total passenger traffic for both transportation and cruise, slipping a position in 2023 in transport passage when it ranked third.
Specifically, the province’s ports registered 4.1 million tonnes of liquid bulk and 9 million tonnes of general merchandise last year, reflecting increases of 10.5 and 9.2 percent respectively, compared to the average state growth for both categories of 2.3 and 6.10 percent.
In terms of provisioning, the Port Authority of Tenerife surpassed 770,000 tonnes, achieving a percentage improvement of 31%, compared to the national average increase of 8.10%, while the count of merchant ships saw a positive growth of 2.70%, in contrast to the one percent state average.
Furthermore, Tenerife’s ports handled 14,454,822 million tonnes of total traffic in 2024, which included liquid bulk, general merchandise, and supplies, as well as the movement of solid bulk, which experienced a decline for much of the year, ultimately finishing with a negative balance of -10 percent.
Of that total, 4.2 million tonnes were classified as container merchandise, representing an increase of 236,000 tonnes from 2023, thus positioning the province’s ports in the sixth national rank with a positive growth rate of 6%.
