SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE Jan. 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo of Tenerife and the Güímar Town Hall have inaugurated the new Seawater Desalination Plant situated in the Güímar Industrial Estate, with a daily output of 2,800 cubic metres, effectively nearly tripling the previous supply.

This new facility caters to the Güímar Industrial Estate and local agriculturalists, and its implementation has been expedited due to the Water Emergency Declaration issued by the Tenerife Cabildo.

The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, the Councillor of Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez; and the Mayor of Güímar, Gustavo Pérez, inspected the new facility this Thursday, accompanied by municipal technicians and representatives from the Tenerife Island Water Council.

Dávila highlighted that “the commissioning of the desalination plant, which represents an investment of 2.4 million euros, will significantly increase the water supply capacity to serve both the Güímar Industrial Estate and the agricultural sector.”

“Our aim is to ensure water security for the island of Tenerife, and this is one of the urgent projects undertaken by the Tenerife Cabildo following the Water Emergency Declaration. This desalination plant will enable us to conserve groundwater, ensuring that the primary sector receives adequate water in this vital agricultural region,” stated the Cabildo president.

In addition, Gustavo Pérez noted that this initiative has made strides in securing a larger volume of water for the Güímar Valley.

“This significant boost in water supply will serve both urban needs and agriculture, making this a day for celebration,” he remarked.

Blanca Pérez elaborated that the desalination facility guarantees the area’s water security.

“It is intended that from this point we will not only provide water for the Güímar Industrial Estate and part for agriculture, but that the municipalities of Candelaria and Güímar will have the capability to connect. This will allow for water delivery to the low-lying areas of Candelaria and Puertito de Güímar. In fact, the Güímar Town Hall has received funding to establish that connection with this desalination plant. It will also enable the Chigengue well to be releases for use in supplying more water to the upper areas, as well as for the municipal agricultural sector,” she explained.

AGREEMENT TO ELIMINATE DILIGENCE DELAYS

In addition to this initiative, the Tenerife Cabildo and the Güímar Town Hall have formalised an agreement that includes a contribution of 5.4 million from the Tenerife Island Water Council – an agency affiliated with the island government – alongside an additional 1.4 million euros from the Cabildo’s own resources and 366,750 euros from the council.

The project outlines and assesses the necessary works to execute the EBAR at the existing site of the Los Tarajales Wastewater Treatment Plant, located adjacent to the Puertito de Güímar Nautical Club, in addition to the necessary infrastructure to transport sewage flows to the regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Valle de Güímar.

The aim is for the Los Tarajales EBAR to serve the Puertito de Güímar area and, in the future, to cater to the communities along the Agache coast (La Caleta, Punta Prieta, Chimaje and El Tablado).

Moreover, the project includes a pipeline running parallel to the sewage discharge line to transport desalinated water from the Industrial Estate to the El Puertito storage tanks.

This final measure will facilitate the release of water from the Chiguengue well for the benefit of the population and the primary sector.
