SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, July 21 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The general secretary of the PSOE Canarias and former president of the regional government, Ángel Víctor Torres, has asked the new Minister of Education, Poli Suárez (PP), to be “rigorous” when he talks about education from 0 to 3 years, and has also assured that the next academic year 2023-2024 there will be around 1,200 more places for this age group.
This was stated in statements to the media after a meeting of the Regional Executive Commission, meeting this afternoon in an extraordinary session, as a result of the “confusion” created by the statements of the new Minister of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands in relation to the operation of classrooms from 0 to 3 years of dependent centers.
Ángel Víctor Torres wanted to make it clear that “public and free” education from 0 to 3 years old “has been achieved with the Pact of Flowers, with the progressive government, with the PSOE defending the Ministry of Education” and with him as president “because it was never done before”. “Those who now govern did not believe in this, because if they had believed it, they would have done it,” he said.
Torres admitted that Poli Suárez’s first words as counselor have surprised him because “either the papers have not been prepared well or very little has been applied.” For this reason, he has asked him to “study the issues well and when he appears publicly, say things rigorously because he can shock those who are receiving that news.”
Moreover, he assured that for the 2023-2024 academic year a total of 600 places are already guaranteed, as has been the case in this academic year, which can begin on September 11; places that, according to Ángel Víctor Torres, “are in the centers, which are prepared, have their endowments and their staff already hired”.
He also indicated that for the rest of the places that are to be included in the next course, 42 classrooms have been tendered and now the works will have to be done. In the same way, he added that 76 teachers and 76 assistants will be hired this July, as was done last year. “With which, 600 children will start on September 11 and 600 more children between September and October, so we are talking about 1,200 children from 0 to 3 years old who would already be in school,” stressed the former Canarian president.
“What are you talking about in January? Are we perhaps in a message that is intended to promote going to schools that are not public and free? Is the PP already implementing its ideological model?” asked Torres, who believes that the new Minister of Education has to “recognize and thank” the work of the outgoing government and, when it goes out to the media, be “rigorous.” Likewise, he took the opportunity to ask him when he is going to meet with the former Minister of Education, Manuela Armas, for the transfer of powers.
