The Vice President and Tourism Councillor of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Lope Afonso, has highlighted that hosting this event featuring the Absolute Men’s National Team at the Heliodoro is “a significant sporting achievement for the Island.” “This opportunity places Tenerife back on the international sports map. It is a privilege to host the Absolute Men’s National Team for the first time in almost three decades, as well as the chance to watch Tenerife players Pedri and Ayoze Pérez in action before their local supporters at such a grand event,” he elaborated.
Lope Afonso recalled that the Cabildo of Tenerife, through various adjustments, “committed to ensuring the Heliodoro meets optimal standards to accommodate both teams in line with UEFA requirements.” “This match serves as a qualifier for the Nations Cup’s final phase and follows the Women’s National Team match, with the forthcoming Kings and Queens League celebration in December also taking place at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López,” he continued.
Alejandro Morales Mansito, the president of the Tenerife Inter-Insular Football Federation (FIFT), expressed that it is “a matter of pride for Tenerife and the Canary Islands to welcome the newly crowned European champions on 18th November.” He expressed gratitude to both the Cabildo of Tenerife and the Government of the Canary Islands for their “strong and unwavering” support in establishing Tenerife as a leading location for high-calibre international matches, alongside the RFEF for selecting the FIFT for this prestigious event. “In just a few months, we have accomplished a milestone as both World Champions and recent European Champions will be playing in Tenerife,” he emphasised.
The insular Sports Councillor, Yolanda Moliné, noted that on 18th November “we will witness another historic occasion at our Stadium as we host the European champions. The Absolute Men’s National Team will compete in an official UEFA Nations League match, featuring players from Tenerife, Pedro González and Ayoze Pérez.”
“This match marks the return of the Men’s National Team after twenty-eight years. Our Heliodoro Rodríguez López will once again be adorned, just like it was last June for the World Champions,” he remarked.
It will be the fourth time Spain has played in Tenerife. They first played there on 13th December 1989, when Spain triumphed over Switzerland with a score of 2-1; the second match took place in 1994, a friendly ahead of the World Cup in the United States, where they drew 1-1 against Poland. Finally, in 1996, they faced Slovakia and won decisively with a score of 4-1.
