A brutal crime committed in Canarias has left a family from Asturias completely devastated. The National Police is investigating the murder of a 28-year-old man from Oviedo, whose body was found lifeless in an apartment in the Costa Adeje area on Sunday. The victim had a cable around his neck and showed signs of strangulation, as well as several blows to the head. Investigations led to the arrest of the alleged perpetrator, a former convict who had just been released from prison after serving a 16-year sentence for another murder. The victim, a resident of Vallobín and son of a deceased former councillor from Grandas de Salime, had been living on the island for some time.
The National Police raised the alarm on Sunday afternoon when they found the body of a young man inside a building in the Mare Verde complex, in the Torviscas area. National Police officers arrived at the scene and upon initial inspection, signs of violence were detected as possible causes of death, as reported by the newspaper El Día de Tenerife, from the same publishing group as La Nueva España.
Due to the nature of the case, being a violent death, the Homicide Group of the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade of Santa Cruz de Tenerife was activated. The officers carried out a series of inquiries and proceeded to arrest a man as the alleged perpetrator of the murder.
The Duty Court in Arona (instruction four) ordered the detained individual to be remanded in custody, without bail, yesterday. Judicial sources indicated that the case is under seal. They also mentioned that, according to initial investigations, the victim died from drowning in the shower, although no further details are provided to avoid interfering with the ongoing investigations.
The suspect had been released from prison last winter after serving a 16-year sentence for murder. In this case, he is charged as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of homicide or murder with cruelty.
The tragic news did not reach the victim’s inner circle until hours later. Several friends and neighbours of Vallobín and Grandas de Salime, the town in western Asturias where the young man was from, were deeply shocked. The deceased had an older sister who was his main support in a family marked by tragedy. Their mother, a worker at the University of Oviedo, died suddenly 19 years ago. The father, who was a councilor and deputy mayor in a coalition government, also passed away prematurely two years ago.
Acquaintances of the victim describe him as “a normal lad” who used to visit Grandas de Salime “from time to time” and whose many blows in his barely three decades of life had affected him deeply.
Neighbours in Oviedo said that after the head of the family’s death, the young man continued to live in the family home in Vallobín. Later, for reasons unknown to them, he decided to move to Canarias. It was there that fate brought him into contact with a dangerous individual with a history of violent crimes, who, according to initial investigations, took his life for reasons yet to be clarified.
In Vallobín and Grandas de Salime, disbelief prevailed. “We can’t believe it, it’s very sad to see someone so young, whom we watched grow, leave like this,” said a neighbour from the western Asturian municipality.
