SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 22 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo of Tenerife, via the Traditional Clothing Sector Council, has provided citizens with a compilation of templates for various garments that constitute the traditional attire of men and women. The aim of this initiative is to encourage the appropriate use of the island’s traditional dress and to uphold our cultural identity.

The Minister of Employment, Education and Youth, Efraín Medina, pointed out that this second edition of traditional Canarian clothing templates “is intended to refine certain aspects of the previous edition and gather feedback from users, such as decreasing the number of patterns per page or specifying measurements on certain straight lines.”

Furthermore, Efraín Medina expressed gratitude for the contribution of all collaborators, stating, “It is gratifying to work with such a professional team, demonstrating such capability. This is an endeavour that benefits the entire Island and assists in preserving our historical heritage and our identity as a community,” he remarked.

To enhance its usability, each component is described along with guidelines on its application. Thus, the collection comprises three key elements: identification tables for each garment, detailing the necessary steps to correctly derive the patterns; boxes illustrating all the pieces that comprise each garment along with their names and identification numbers; and the templates from which the patterns for constructing the garments are drawn, categorised into men’s and women’s templates, featuring various types of lines and colours.

These templates will be available to anyone interested in crafting a traditional outfit, ensuring that the piece they create adheres to traditional values.

THE PATTERN COLLECTION

The selected templates that form this ‘database’ include, on one hand, the essential garments common across all attire, as well as the most sought-after variations associated with specific models currently worn by folk groups and individuals.

The primary goal of this new resource offered by the Sector Council is to serve as a tool for those keen on creating a traditional costume. Although the contents of the folder focus on Tenerife attire, the majority of the clothing is typical across the entire Archipelago, making it applicable to other islands. In addition to this dossier, an alternative edition has been produced using cardboard pieces to ensure accessibility for all audiences (senior centres, individuals without sewing experience, etc.), as this format is easier to understand and utilise.

THE SECTORAL COUNCIL

Among the objectives of this entity is to analyse and discuss the current state of traditional clothing usage on the Island; to advocate for the establishment of policies that encourage proper use, and to promote and support the dissemination and preservation of artisan trades related to the typical and traditional clothing of Tenerife.

Additionally, the Traditional Clothing Sector Council aims to safeguard our traditions in traditional dress and comprises researchers, artisans, and specialists in the field. In this context, the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Davila, promotes one of the strategic goals of the Council to involve educators and students from the Canary Islands in raising awareness about the appropriate use of traditional clothing as a cultural symbol.
