Over 600 youths congregated yesterday in the town centre of Villa de La Orotava to engage in a variety of artistic disciplines as part of the XXV edition of Young Street Art. The diverse locations encompassing the Town Hall, Plaza de la Constitución, El Puente, Carrera Escultor Estévez, Calvario, and Avenida de Canarias transformed into a vibrant showcase of open-air artistry, attracting more than 22,000 attendees.
This initiative intertwines culture, art, enjoyment, entertainment, and education, while also revitalising the urban area, as local businesses in the downtown region benefitted from the increased footfall.
In this 25th iteration, the Merkarte fair was introduced, marking its twentieth anniversary and featuring fifteen talented artists. The aim of the initiative is to highlight, promote, and empower young creatives on the island, aiding their professional development and integration into the workforce.
Young Street Art emerged as a trailblazer in the Canary Islands back in 2000 and, after all these years, continues to capture significant interest. Each edition consistently focuses on elevating young local talent across various artistic fields, enabling them to exhibit and share their work, art, and creativity in a live setting.
This year’s Young Street Art showcased numerous artistic forms including painting, drawing, photography, theatre, dance, urban art, puppeteering, storytelling, live music, magic, statuary, illustration, graffiti, comedy, character performance, and mime, among others. Additionally, various engaging workshops were available for children.
Complementary activities also featured, such as a tour titled ‘Masonry in the Gardens of the Marquisate of the Quinta Roja’, exhibitions, and an outdoor quick painting contest. The jury’s deliberation and awards ceremony took place in the Plaza de la Constitución, marking the final closure of the event around 3:30 p.m.
