PSOE Calls on Tenerife Cabildo to Resolve Ongoing Tram Strike After Eight Months

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 2 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The spokesperson for the Socialist Group at the Tenerife Cabildo, Aarón Afonso, alongside counsellor Marián Franquet, convened a meeting this Wednesday to discuss the ongoing tram strike, which is nearing its eighth consecutive month, highlighting that the governing group has not taken “meaningful actions in pursuit of a resolution to end the conflict”.

The socialists noted in a statement that the strike initiated by the Metropolitano de Tenerife workers began in February of this year, stemming from what representatives of the Strike Committee deem a “systematic breach” of the agreement made in June 2023, when Pedro Martín (PSOE) was the president of the Cabildo and brought an end to a protest that had started in the previous February.

However, in light of these breaches, they assert, “the workers resolved to resume striking, an action that took place in February this year, and the situation not only remains unresolved, but in September the protest actions intensified, becoming increasingly evident to tram users”.

Aarón Afonso expressed his group’s “concern” regarding a strike that impacts both users and the health of workers, stressing that after eight months “it is time for the governing group of the Canary Coalition and the Popular Party to come together and seek a resolution”.

Meanwhile, Luis Marrero, president of the Strike Committee, emphasised that the strike is driven by concerns over the occupational health of the workforce.

“The sand being used generates a highly carcinogenic dust. This is where the entire dispute originates. We are fighting for safe working conditions. We would like citizens to support us and urge the politicians responsible for the negotiations,” he emphasised.
