The Government Council has sanctioned the decree designating the Ateneo de La Laguna Association as a public interest entity for the Canary Islands, following a proposal by the Minister of the Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice and Security, Nieves Lady Barreto. This decision is based on the association’s intent to promote the general interest of the autonomous community and the advantages its activities provide to Canarian society.
The Ateneo de La Laguna encompasses among its objectives the advancement and support of culture in all its manifestations, allowing it to develop and advocate for both public and private initiatives. It also seeks to stimulate public opinion and continuous discourse surrounding scientific, artistic, and humanistic matters, alongside any other human endeavour that is directly or indirectly linked to its aims. The association is committed to a consistent, altruistic effort, free from ideological conformity, dedicated to serving the Canary Islands while upholding principles of respect, independence, and tolerance.
Reports indicate that 48 cultural events were organised in 2022, with a total of 80 scheduled for 2023. These events include art exhibitions, musical and performing arts events, literature and theatre showcases, audiovisual presentations, as well as humanities and science activities, culminating in an art festival.
Established since 1966, the Ateneo de La Laguna Association is registered in the Registry of Associations of the Canary Islands under number G1/S1/11483-66/TF, operating within the jurisdiction of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. It formally submitted its request for public interest declaration on March 7, 2024.
In alignment with other public interest declarations in the Canary Islands, it has been verified that its activities are not limited solely to its members. Furthermore, the representatives receiving remuneration do so without public subsidy funding, and the association possesses adequate material and personal resources to ensure the fulfilment of its established aims. Additionally, it has illustrated that it has been operational and consistently executing activities for a minimum of two years prior to the application being lodged.
