This Saturday, La Laguna played host to the primary events of the main day of the Fiestas del Santísimo Cristo, which signifies the traditional return of the crucified Christ’s image from the interior of the Cathedral to its Royal Sanctuary. The day unfolded without any issues and drew hundreds of attendees to the historic centre, participating in both the Eucharistic celebration and the return procession.
The Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, highlighted “the significance and sentiment that this day holds for the people of La Laguna.” “All of us, be we believers or not, cherish wonderful moments and memories linked to this 14th of September from our youth, strolling with family through the town and observing our revered image on its iconic route to the Plaza del Cristo,” the mayor reminisced.
The scheduled activities commenced at 10:15 with a civil-military procession and the transfer of the royal standard from the Town Hall to the Cathedral, attended by various civil, military, and consular dignitaries. This time, it was the president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, who represented the Royal House.
Other officials in attendance included the deputy government delegate in the Canary Islands, Javier Plata; the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila; as well as a substantial representation from the La Laguna City Council and other island institutions. Following the solemn Eucharist, the return procession took place, escorting the Christ of La Laguna from the Cathedral to its original sanctuary.
The events of Saturday will conclude with Heritage Night celebrations (from 5:00 p.m.) and the procession of the revered image of Christ through the city’s main thoroughfares, culminating in its return to the square where a spectacular fireworks display is scheduled to begin at 11:30 p.m. The festivities will wrap up with the megaverbenazo of Christ, featuring performances by El Morocho y la Gran Orquesta, Virginia Guantanamera, and The Boys Machine.
