SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 6 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Tenerife Island Council, via Tenerife Island Interurban Transport (Titsa), an entity of the Tenerife Island Council, will introduce two fresh university shuttle routes starting Monday, September 16, connecting La Orotava and Costa Adeje with the University of La Laguna (ULL). These will be in addition to the current services.
This initiative was unveiled on Friday at the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Transport Interchange by the President of the Tenerife Island Council, Rosa Dávila, alongside the Minister of Mobility, Eulalia García, and the Vice-Chancellor for Sustainability and Infrastructure, Candelaria Díaz.
Rosa Dávila outlined that this project aims to enhance accessibility to the primary university campuses for the academic community in both the northern and southern regions of the island, which includes areas such as La Orotava, Adeje, Los Cristianos, San Isidro, Güímar, and Candelaria.
“With these four routes, we aspire to offer a convenient alternative for over 3,300 students commuting from the South and nearly 4,000 from the North. It is noted that approximately 30% to 40% of our students rely on private vehicles as their primary mode of transport, particularly in more remote locations like the northern and southern parts of the island, where public transport availability has been limited in the past. These shuttle services, which are entirely eco-friendly, are intended not only to facilitate access to higher education but also to form part of a wider sustainable mobility initiative that we are implementing at the Cabildo de Tenerife,” Dávila stated in a communication from the council.
Eulalia García emphasised that this represents a significant advancement, as the Mobility sector is addressing the requests from the student community, who expressed a desire for new shuttle routes, particularly the ones serving the South.
Candelaria Díaz expressed gratitude towards the Tenerife Island Council for its dedication to the University of La Laguna.
“Investing in these new shuttle routes from the southern part of the island will not only alleviate the challenges faced by the university community residing far from the urban core and our faculties but will also aid in enhancing traffic flow and mobility in general,” Díaz remarked.
The newly introduced shuttles, 611 (Costa Adeje-University) and 605 (La Orotava-University), will supplement those launched last year, which connect Icod de los Vinos (606) and Los Realejos (608) to the Guajara Classrooms, respectively.
The 611 service will link Costa Adeje station with the University Hospital, stopping at Los Cristianos, San Isidro, Güímar, Candelaria, Guajara Campus, Andrómeda Street, La Laguna Interchange (Central Campus in Anchieta), Faculty of Economics, and Lecture Hall.
The shuttle will operate Monday to Friday, departing from Costa Adeje station at 06:45 and 13:10, with return journeys from the University Hospital at 14:40 and 21:00.
The 605 service, departing from La Orotava station, will stop at Calle Nelson Mandela, El Ramal, Coromoto, the Faculty of Economics, the Guajara Lecture Hall, the Canary Islands University Hospital (HUC), and La Candelaria Hospital.
This new route will operate Monday to Friday, leaving La Orotava at 07:05 and returning at 14:45.
SHUTTLES 606 AND 608
Additionally, commencing Monday 16th, Titsa will reinstate the operations of shuttle lines 606 and 608, which have connected the northern region of the island with the ULL since last year. Therefore, line 606, connecting from Icod de los Vinos station to the Aulario del Campus de Guajara, and line 608, running from Los Realejos, will continue to operate regularly, thereby complementing the new shuttle services.
Both routes will sustain their typical frequencies and schedules to enhance the public transport offerings for university users and optimise their travel times.
The ULL 606 shuttle will persist in departing from Icod station at 06:30 and return from the university campus at 14:45, with stops at Buen Paso, La Uvi, Santa Catalina, El Cubo, Los Realejos Link, La Orotava Link, Coromoto, the Faculty of Economics, and the Aulario.
Meanwhile, the ULL 608 shuttle will leave from Mencey Bencomo square in Los Realejos at 06:50 and will return from Guajara at 14:45, stopping at Avenida de Canarias, Los Barros, Enlace Los Realejos, Enlace Orotava, Coromoto, Faculty of Economics, and Aulario.
