A 52-year-old man was apprehended by Civil Guard officers in Santa Cruz de Tenerife port after disembarking from a ferry. He was found in possession of three specimens of the endangered Gran Canaria giant lizard in his vehicle.
The arrest occurred during a routine check for individuals and vehicles upon the arrival of a commercial vessel at the port. Sources from the law enforcement agency provided detailed information on the incident.
Officers from the Fiscal and Border Section intercepted the vehicle in question and, following an interview with the driver, became suspicious due to his nervous behaviour.
Subsequently, a cursory search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a live young specimen of a small lizard (a type of giant lizard from Gran Canaria) and, hidden inside the emergency triangles cover, two larger specimens of the same species.
The individual in custody has a history of previous offences related to similar crimes, according to the Civil Guard.
