The vote of censure against the socialist mayor, Marco González, in Puerto de la Cruz was formally signed on Wednesday by the PP, CC, and ACP. This information was communicated on Thursday morning by the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, to the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, as well as the former top regional leader from 2019 to 2023 and general secretary of the Canary Islands PSOE, Ángel Víctor Torres, during a phone call.
Sources mentioned by Canarias Ahora revealed that Torres contacted the minister in a state of alarm upon learning about the decision made by the Asamblea Ciudadana Portuense (ACP) on Wednesday after an emergency meeting. The ACP decided to end the current agreement with the PSOE and work towards an alternative government with the PP and CC. Clavijo verified the formalization of the pact before a notary in Tenerife’s capital and placed the step in the context of feedback received from his two councilors and other party members in the tourist city. This feedback primarily highlighted the personal and contextual dynamic of David Hernández, the spokesman for ACP, with the local socialist group and specific internal decisions made by Mayor Marco González regarding the latest municipal list.
The situation might change if CC withdraws its support, possibly due to external pressure, especially considering that the PSOE in La Laguna did not form a pact with the two left-wing parties and instead included CC in the government. This leaves room for potential shifts in the political landscape moving forward.
ACP is scheduled to host a press conference on Thursday morning to elaborate on the decision taken on Wednesday.
