SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 23 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Island Council of Tenerife will implement level 2 measures starting tomorrow, Wednesday, to prevent forest fires in light of the expected high temperatures reaching up to 34 degrees. As a precaution, overnight stays in recreational and camping areas are now prohibited, along with the circulation of motor vehicles on forest roads. These level 2 measures will be in effect from 07:00 tomorrow until Monday, 29th July.
Rosa Dávila, the president of the Cabildo, has urged the public to adhere to these guidelines due to the increased risk of forest fires triggered by the soaring temperatures. She stated, “Given the exceptional circumstances, we have elevated preventive measures to discourage people from venturing into the mountains and to prevent any fire outbreaks. It’s crucial to implement these measures to ensure the safety of individuals and the natural surroundings.”
The prohibition of outdoor fires, including barbecues, bonfires, gas stoves, or camping stoves, remains in place. Forestry activities and the use of machinery that could produce sparks, such as brush cutters, welding equipment, or radial saws, are also suspended. Any use of pyrotechnic materials in high-risk zones is banned, as well as smoking in recreational areas, camping sites, trails, viewpoints, and other public facilities situated in mountain areas. The level 2 measures further encompass the restriction of motor vehicle access for recreational purposes on forest roads and the prohibition of overnight stays in recreational and camping areas. Sporting events and pilgrimages on forest trails and cross-country routes are also temporarily halted. Finally, mouflon control initiatives are put on hold.
The Council is encouraging the public to follow the health authorities’ recommendations, which include staying well-hydrated even when not feeling thirsty, wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, and light-coloured clothing, seeking shade, and limiting outdoor activities during the hottest hours (around 12:00 to 16:00). Special attention should be given to vulnerable groups such as children, elderly individuals, and people with chronic illnesses who are more prone to the adverse effects of extreme heat.
