The body discovered earlier this week in a vicinity close to the village of Masca, in Tenerife, was carrying the identification papers of the 19-year-old British visitor who disappeared on the 17th of June.
Confirmation of the complete identification and the cause of death is pending the results of the ongoing autopsy analysis.
The discovery was made by the Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group of the Civil Guard in a remote and challenging terrain, with the leading theory pointing towards an accidental fall.
Slater had travelled to the island to participate in a music festival and had encountered two individuals during the night with whom he ventured to an apartment in the Masca region, quite a distance from his initial lodging.
The last communication with Slater was a call he made to a friend on the island in the early hours of June 17, expressing confusion about his whereabouts, thirst, and an intention to walk to her apartment. Soon after, his phone battery depleted. The location of his call was significantly distant from his residence, situated inland with numerous gorges and cliffs, noted for the popular tourist spot of Masca and its ravine, a route that is restricted and accessible only by reservation due to the high frequency of accidents.
The search operation, employing drones, canines, and helicopters, has been concentrating on these gorges within the region, spanning a vast area of the island’s northwest coast.
