SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 21st June. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands has given the green light to the provision of discounts for inter-island maritime transport for residents of the Canary Islands travelling during the final quarter of 2023 and the first, second, and third quarters of 2024.
The assistance, based on decree 222/2000 of 4th December, will benefit Canarian residents utilising maritime transport services provided by authorized shipping companies operating within the islands, and will be subsidised by 25% by the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands.
Consequently, through this allowance, the State will cover 50% of the expenses, while the Canary Islands will fund 25%, resulting in a 75% reduction on ferry fares for inter-island journeys for residents.
Specifically, applications for the fourth quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024 can be submitted within one month following the publication in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands. Additionally, the Ministry has stipulated that applications for the second and third quarters of 2024 will be accepted within one month after each respective period ends.
Reimbursements of the discounts provided by the shipping companies will be administered by the General Directorate of Transport, funded by the 2024 General Budgets of the Autonomous Community. The allocations fall under the ‘Compensation for inter-island maritime transport for residents of the Canary Islands’ strategy, with a budget of 36,500,000 euros.
