Beginning this Monday, June 3, the Santa Cruz City Council will be implementing traffic changes on Núñez de la Peña Street to accommodate the installation of the first three innovative pedestrian crossings.
As a result, the road will be temporarily closed, and parking will be prohibited along the affected section for a minimum of 7 days.
The specific areas undergoing construction are situated on Núñez de la Peña Street between the junction with García Lorca Street and José Espinosa Cambreling Street, which will be inaccessible.
Alternative traffic routes
In addition, there will be no access to Núñez de la Peña Street in an upward direction, with traffic being redirected from García Lorca Street down Núñez de la Peña Street, exiting through Vizconde de Buen Paso Street or José Peña Hernández Street. Entry will be allowed solely for school transport and residents.
Furthermore, at the junction of García Lorca Street and Poeta Gutiérrez Albelo Street, entry onto Núñez de la Peña Street will be restricted, with access granted exclusively to school transport and residents.
Parking will be specifically designated on Núñez de la Peña Street between the intersection with García Lorca Street and José Espinosa Cambreling Street.
Innovative intelligent pedestrian crossings
The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, highlighted that “these advanced road fixtures will significantly reduce the risk of pedestrian accidents on certain city streets. Road safety measures remain a top priority, aiming to transform the capital into a safer and more progressive environment.”
Evelyn Alonso, the Councilor for Mobility and Universal Accessibility, disclosed that “an investment of 340,000 euros has been made to introduce a total of 23 intelligent pedestrian crossings in the capital. These crossings feature two illuminated plates, one on each end of the white pedestrian line, which are activated when pedestrians are present.”
