Tenerifehides a multitude of enigmatic corners around which rumors and stories circulate. One of these places is theCasa de Franco, where it is said that the dictator lived. Another is thelarge abandoned antenna in the south of the Island, which was presented as an impressive plan for Tenerife’s self-sufficiency. Within these tales, there is also room for covens, witches, and a “Holy Man”.
In the forest of Agua García, between the municipalities of Tacoronte and El Sauzal, one can find one of the most historic dancing sites on the Island. Where covens and meigas, as witches are called in Galicia, have their place in legends. We refer to Las Crucitas or the Witches’ Dancing Spot.
A clearing opens up amidst the lushness of the forest. In the centre of it, surrounded by ancient pine trees, an ancient juniper with two crosses placed haphazardly. Usually, they are found upside down. Moreover, on the ground, there are two more crosses fixed. Both show clear neglect throughout the year but, when May comes around, their appearance begins to change.
Many attribute stories of another time to it. What is certain is that every year, at the beginning of May, someone takes care of cleaning up the surroundings and tidying up the place. They paint the area around the crosses, place them in their original position, and adorn them with flowers around them. As if it were an offering, the same ritual every year.
