Covens, Sorceresses, and a “Holy Man” in Tenerife: The Ancient Juniper Surrounded by Pine Trees and Crosses Where a Legend Takes Root

Tenerife hides a multitude of enigmatic corners around which rumors and stories circulate. One of these places is the Casa de Franco, where it is said that the dictator lived. Another is the large abandoned antenna in the south of the Island, which was presented as an impressive plan for Tenerife’s self-sufficiency. Within these tales, there is also room for covens, witches, and a “Holy Man”.

In the forest of Agua García, between the municipalities of Tacoronte and El Sauzal, one can find one of the most historic dancing sites on the Island. Where covens and meigas, as witches are called in Galicia, have their place in legends. We refer to Las Crucitas or the Witches’ Dancing Spot.

A clearing opens up amidst the lushness of the forest. In the centre of it, surrounded by ancient pine trees, an ancient juniper with two crosses placed haphazardly. Usually, they are found upside down. Moreover, on the ground, there are two more crosses fixed. Both show clear neglect throughout the year but, when May comes around, their appearance begins to change.

Many attribute stories of another time to it. What is certain is that every year, at the beginning of May, someone takes care of cleaning up the surroundings and tidying up the place. They paint the area around the crosses, place them in their original position, and adorn them with flowers around them. As if it were an offering, the same ritual every year.

Investigators Javier García Miranda and Eduardo Pedro García Rodríguez pondered the question that many others thought about but did not dare to confront: “Why do they do all this?”. After much inquiry, Javier managed to get the testimony of some elderly people who referred to the place as “lucky”, a fact passed down from generation to generation: “We come here because it brings good luck, our parents and grandparents have always done so“.

The Tale of the “Holy Man”

According to these elderly people, a chosen man arrived at that place: “It is said that a “Holy Man” wanted to die here many years ago and entrusted his family to take care of this place.” That family, allegedly, currently resides in La Esperanza.

Additionally, the elders also recalled older stories: “It is said that witches used to come here to dance”. Referring back to the individual they labelled as holy, he was a native of Tenerife who performed good deeds and dedicated himself to “healing people”.

Another informant from the area, who hailed from Ravelo, mentioned that in that place “was where the witches used to dance”. Furthermore, he reminisced about celebrations of the past: “on the evening of the Day of the Cross, the elders danced like mad. In the past, the entrance of the cave La Labrada was decorated, which was believed to be a sacred cave”.

The Day of the Cross

The 3rd of May is the day marked on the calendar for this place. In the past, many people would go to Las Crucitas on the eve of the Day of the Cross to pray. Not so on the 3rd of May itself when, as these people commented, “On the Day of the Cross, the healers come to do their work and people cannot stay.”

Stories that hide among the most secluded corners of Tenerife. Stories that pass down from generation to generation and that, even if we don’t know if they are real or fictional, add value to the Canarian identity.
