SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 22nd May (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Interurban Transport company of Tenerife, Titsa, under the administration of Cabildo, has witnessed a surge of 5.5 million passengers during the initial four months of 2024, marking a growth of over 25% compared to the same period in the previous year. The northern region recorded the highest surge in passengers at 30.2%, followed by the southern area at 25.96%, and the central region at 24.21%.

Rosa Dávila, the president of Cabildo, emphasised the significance of these figures as a substantial increase from the previous year, highlighting the importance of advocating for public transportation as a primary solution for enhancing mobility on the island. Accompanied by Vice President Lope Afonso and Mobility Minister Eulalia García, Dávila convened a meeting with municipal authorities to align actions aimed at enhancing transportation.

An important economic commitment has been made towards increasing the bus fleet, with over 80 million Euros allocated since August for acquiring new vehicles. Dávila stressed the need for coordination between diverse stakeholders, particularly municipal authorities responsible for mobility, traffic, and transportation, to optimise the impact of the investments in infrastructure and new mobility systems.

Additionally, discussions at the meeting included plans for launching on-demand transportation in Güímar, Fasnia, and Arico municipalities. This initiative seeks to introduce a customized transport system progressively without fixed routes, providing enhanced flexibility, especially during peak hours from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., aligned with existing bus stops. The regionalised on-demand transport system will be expanded gradually to other northern regions of the island by the Cabildo.
