Housing issues in Tenerife extend beyond Spain. The lack of supply has driven up rents, compounded by the ‘squatter’ movement. This is not only out of necessity, as seen in Tijoco Bajo, in southern Tenerife.
In the municipality of Adeje, a company took charge of evicting 43 residences that had been ‘squatted’ for a long time. Inside, some were living in luxury: high-end cars, high cc motorcycles, and some were even rented out as vacation homes.
The company responsible for this operation is Exproperty Solutions, which focuses on reclaiming properties unlawfully occupied. These are handed back to their rightful owners, but not before the company refurbishes and cleans the interiors of the reclaimed properties.
In a video shared on their social media, the summary of their work in Tijoco Bajo shows how they operate. They highlight the key points to achieve the end goal:
- Negotiation with the squatters.
- Clearing out possessions and sanitation of the recovered residences.
- Removal of materials from the residences. Among those in Tijoco Bajo, there was a residence used as a storage space for furniture and other items.
- Lock changes and subsequent installation of anti-squatting doors.
Through conflict mediation and negotiation, Ezpropierty has succeeded in freeing a building that had been ‘occupied’ for years and had no local residents inside.
