Emerging talents Keylor Aday Ramos González and Gara Suárez Alonso have been named the Children’s Magician and Magician of the May Festival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife 2024. Representing the Carricitos Cultural Association and the Mamel’s Festival Musician Association, these youngsters graced the stage at Plaza de La Candelaria dressed in traditional Tenerife and La Palma peasant attire from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The court of honour for the Children’s Magician included Isabel Ruiz Fuentes, Julia Rodríguez Berriel, Carlota Medina Baute, and Sara Corimbo Monteverde, while the Magician’s court of honour comprised Gabriel García Caballero, Naím Rincón González, Aduen Ramos Álvarez, and Elian García Rodríguez. The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, bestowed the winners with their sashes, and the Festival councilor, Javier Caraballero, awarded the courts of honour.
The Plaza de La Candelaria was abuzz with spectators witnessing a captivating showcase of traditional island attire, featuring the participation of 12 girls and 5 boys. The event was skillfully hosted by Paula Álvarez, with entertainment provided by the children’s group Achimagec and Tenerife’s La Voz Kids 5 winner, Irene Gil.
The judging panel responsible for selecting the new Children’s Magician and Magician for the Santa Cruz festivities included Francisco José Martín Rodríguez, director of the University Folkloric Group (AFU); Milagros Amador González, from the Ibero-American Crafts Museum of Tenerife; Dulce Rodríguez de La Rosa, a member of the Sectoral Council of Traditional Clothing of the Cabildo of Tenerife; Alicia Afonso del Rosario, member of the Real Hespérides Folkloric Group and an expert in traditional Canarian clothing; Candelario Mendoza Cruz, a scholar of traditional Canarian culture; and Martina Rodríguez Pérez, the jury’s secretary.
The event unfolded at the Plaza de la Candelaria, with the exception of the candidates’ minute readings, which had to be relocated to the Real Casino of Tenerife due to inclement weather.
