Report Filed Against Director and Architect of La Tejita Hotel Building Company

A complaint has been lodged by the Salvar La Tejita association with the Prosecutor’s Office in Santa Cruz de Tenerife against the director and architect of the Galician company Viqueira, responsible for promoting the construction of a hotel near La Tejita beach (Granadilla, in the south of the island). The complaint alleges “systematic and intentional damage” to a protected natural area, specifically the sand dunes adjacent to the beach, one of the few remaining untouched areas in Tenerife.

The complaint is based on a statement from the General Subdirectorate of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, which stated that “the builder lacks authorization to operate within the public maritime-terrestrial domain” and believes that the company lacks the necessary qualifications, as reported by Canarias Now on March 6.

The group also highlights a violation of Article 330 of the Penal Code.

This is the second complaint filed by Salvar La Tejita with the Prosecutor’s Office regarding the company’s operations. In 2023, another complaint was lodged for alleged document manipulation and malfeasance by several members of the Granadilla de Abona City Council in connection with the Sotavento Suites project, an initiative by the Viqueira Group located in La Tejita.

The case is currently under investigation by the courts after being looked into by the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.

In February, Viqueira announced that it would resume operations that had been halted since May 2021 by order of the former Government of the Canary Islands. Following a court ruling confirming the project’s legality, the company initiated legal proceedings to claim compensation for financial losses incurred during the work stoppage. Subsequently, the Ministry’s clarification led to the latest complaint against the construction firm.
