Measures taken in Icod de los Vinos to prevent water wastage following the declaration of a water emergency by the Tenerife Island Council earlier this month.
The mayor of the northern municipality, Javier Sierra, has issued a municipal decree to all citizens in which the use of potable water is restricted in certain cases, measures that, according to the text itself, have been taken to ensure and guarantee water resources and meet consumption reduction targets.
This public information restricts the irrigation of gardens, orchards, trees, green and sports areas, of a private nature, with exceptions for emergency situations (water stress) and new plantations.
Similarly, filling of pools and fountains will not be allowed if they do not have a recovery system or closed circuit in operation. It is reminded that the use of potable water in removable or inflatable pools is restricted, and washing any type of vehicles with a hose on public roads is not allowed.
The mayor also reminds the prohibition of connecting public water supply networks with those from wells or galleries, with the supply potentially being cut off for sanitary reasons in case of violation.
The decree also establishes that the Local Police and ICODEMSA personnel may carry out monitoring and enforcement tasks of the provisions in that document and, if necessary, report violative behaviours to the Mayor’s Office, which may be subject to fines as stipulated by current legislation at any given time.
